The Light Is On

The Light Is On (TLIO) uses Facial Emotion Recognition (FER) to analyse viewers’ expressions and respond with one of seven categorisations via a machine learning programme trained on the FER2013 dataset; neutral, angry, surprised, happy, sad, disgust, fear. It is worth noting the ‘negative’ trend of these categorisations as integral to the interactions and their results. This was done by Python code on a Raspberry Pi 5 and shown on a monitor with a webcam.
The camera ultimately works as the ‘eye’ assessing the viewer, facilitating the reactions and relationships. TLIO aims to questions what will happen if you are looking for me in my work, only to find a facsimile of yourself? How does this rejection affect the viewer-art-artist dynamic? How do people respond to different labels? Does this upset a sense of selfhood if misaligned with self-views?
